Finishing the School Year and Preparing for a New One
As the school year draws to a close, it’s a perfect time for reflection, celebration, and planning. For autistic students, their parents, and their teachers, this moment is not just about acknowledging academic progress—it’s about recognizing the immense effort, resilience, and collaboration that have shaped the year.
Reflecting on Achievements
Every achievement—big or small—is a testament to the incredible journey of autistic students. Even if the original plans shifted or goals evolved, these milestones are worth celebrating. Autistic learners navigate unique challenges throughout their school day, often expending tremendous effort to adapt, engage, and succeed in environments that can be overwhelming.
The Challenges Autistic Students Navigate:
Sensory Processing
Studies show that 80–90% of autistic individuals experience sensory processing challenges, making busy school environments especially demanding. From noisy classrooms to crowded hallways, these sensory inputs can lead to significant stress and fatigue.
Social Navigation
Autistic students often face difficulties in social interactions, requiring them to work harder to understand social cues, manage relationships, and participate in group activities. Research indicates that many autistic learners spend additional cognitive energy on interpreting these interactions, which can be exhausting.
Executive Functioning
Planning and organizing daily tasks can be especially challenging for autistic students. Whether it’s remembering materials for class or transitioning between activities, these everyday tasks often require extra effort and support.
Celebrating Successes
Given these challenges, the progress made by autistic learners is truly remarkable. Success might look like:
Developing new coping strategies for sensory challenges.
Building and maintaining friendships.
Learning self-advocacy skills or expressing emotions in new ways.
Achieving academic goals or simply persevering through the school day.
Teachers and parents play a pivotal role in supporting these achievements. By creating structured, supportive environments and fostering collaboration, they help unlock potential and create opportunities for growth.
Preparing for the New Year
As you celebrate the successes of the past year, the end of the school year is also a time to prepare for what’s next. Here are a few strategies for a smooth transition, more to come…
For Teachers
Share Success Stories: Prepare an about me document highlighting the student’s achievements and strengths, not just their challenges. Hand this over to the new schoolteacher. Autism QLD have a great template you can follow: Creating an 'All About Me' - Autism Queensland – Resource Hub
Plan for Individual Needs: Review sensory and social supports to ensure they align with the student’s needs in the new environment. Work in collaboration with the new teacher to support and prepare the new environment.
Encourage Self-Reflection: Where possible, involve the student in reflecting on their progress and setting goals for the next year.
For Parents
Celebrate Together: Reflect on the year’s accomplishments with your child, emphasizing their hard work and growth.
Document What Worked: Keep a record of strategies, routines, and tools that supported your child this year. Have these ready to share with the new teacher in 2025
Prepare Gradual Transitions: If possible, visit the new classroom or meet the new teacher ahead of time to reduce anxiety. Talk to your therapist about completing a transition to school social story that you can practice over the holidays. https://carolgraysocialstories.com/

A Final Note of Gratitude
The progress of autistic learners is the result of a team effort between students, parents, and teachers. It’s a journey of perseverance, adaptation, and shared commitment. To all the amazing autistic students, thank you for your determination and courage. To parents and teachers, thank you for your unwavering support and dedication.
As we close one chapter and prepare for the next, let’s take a moment to celebrate every success and look forward with hope and excitement. Here’s to another year of learning, growth, and achievement!
